Information Literacy Learning Outcome: About

Why This Guide?

This guide is intended to break down the Information Literacy guideline in clear and transparent language. The intent is to give instructors easy ways to incorporate this SSLO into their classrooms. The information within this guide was created collaboratively between the librarians at Shoreline Community College and similar work done at other community colleges.

The Shoreline Student Learning Outcome

Students will locate, retrieve, and analyze or evaluate sources to fulfill an information need.

Information literate people will demonstrate an awareness of how they gather, use, manage, synthesize and create information and data in an ethical manner and will have the information skills to do so effectively.

Skills and Outcomes

Examples and ideas of how to meet this SSLO are under the following skills:

Use the resources (tools/materials that provide data/information) available to fill that gap

Use information to relate new knowledge to their information need and prior knowledge

Access and extract information from a source(s) to gain knowledge about a topic

  • Evaluate the completed task or solved problem

Assess information for quality, accuracy, relevancy, bias, authority, and credibility. Identify the value of and differences between resources in a variety of formats (e.g., multimedia, database, website, audio/visual, book)
