Retrieve and extract information from a source(s) to gain knowledge about a topic

Classroom Application

Activities & Exercises

  • Have students upload a PDF of an article they've found using the library's databases and write one sentence that sums up the article's main idea
  • Request that students find a direct quote that sums up the article's "Discussion" heading from a specific article that's only accessible through academic databases
  • Have students answer a question using a direct quote from an article or book accessible through an academic database
  • Assign an essay that requires direct quotes from articles from the last three years from an academic, peer-reviewed article
  • Tell students to read a specific article, give them the title and author, and give them instructions on how to use the academic databases, but don't give them a direct link to the article

Success

Retrieving and Extracting Information Successfully

  • Can successfully access and quote the full text of an article that seems to only show the summary or abstract
  • Finds and quotes the full text of an open access article using the web when given a summary or abstract
  • Quotes directly from an article that is only accessible through an academic database
  • Accurately paraphrases an article using information that isn't in the abstract or summary
