Mental Health Literacy

Mental health literacy is defined as "knowledge and beliefs about mental disorders which aid their recognition, management or prevention".
[Jorm, A. F., Korten, A.E., Jacomb, P.A., et al (1997a) ‘Mental health literacy’: a survey of the public's ability to recognise mental disorders and their beliefs about the effectiveness of treatment. Medical Journal of Australia, 166, 182 -186]

Empathetic listening:

  •   Be non-judgmental
  •   Give undivided attention
  •   Listen carefully to what the person is really saying
  •   Allow silence for reflection
  •   Use restatement to clarify messages
  •   Refer individual to their health care providers (give info, not advice)

Self Care

"Self-care" is a way to check in with yourself, and evaluate your emotional needs. It is not a substitute for professional counseling. Link below to a selection of online resources for self-care techniques.
