Chemistry: O-Chem Information Literacy Lab

Chemistry Learning Guide for finding journal articles, reference materials, and more.

Introduction

Experiment #4:

Chemical Literature Search

REFERENCE:  This experiment was adapted from Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques, A Microscale Approach, by Pavia, Lampman, Kriz, Engel, 3rd edition and North Carolina State University.

Introduction: Before beginning any laboratory work, professional chemists must first devote research time to understanding the substances they will be experimenting with. A few minutes of research can save you hours in the lab.

If you were asked to work with a particular chemical, you'd want to know a little about it first. Sometimes you must go beyond using your Organic Chemistry text and lab text to find information.  Some of the reference material in the library might appear difficult, but the following notes various popular sources and includes an outline for following a logical step-by-step process in undergoing a typical literature search. Many pages contain links to other potential resources.
