#BlackLivesMatter began as a social-media movement when activists Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi created the hashtag in response to the shooting of 17-year old Trayvon Martin. The movement gathered momentum after 18-year old Mike Brown was killed by the Ferguson, MO Police Department. Since then, #BlackLivesmatter has grown into an international civil rights movement that is invested in eliminating the interconnected forms of oppression and injustice that disproportionately impacts Black people.
